Every year, lakhs of students finish their B.Com and face the same question: “What now?” Some plan for CA, CMA or an MBA. Many others want to start working as soon as possible. If you are in the second group, accounting is one of the most direct and stable career paths open to you. This guide explains the roles available, the skills employers actually look for, and how to move from a degree to your first job.

Why Accounting Is a Natural Choice After B.Com

Your B.Com has already given you a foundation in financial accounting, business law, taxation and economics. Accounting builds directly on that foundation. Unlike some fields that need a completely new set of knowledge, accounting lets you use what you already know.

Accounting is also needed everywhere. Every business — a small shop in Burrabazar, a trading firm, a CA office, a manufacturing company or a large corporate — has to record transactions, pay taxes, file returns and prepare financial statements. That means accounting jobs exist across industries and across company sizes. When one sector slows down, another usually keeps hiring.

Common Entry-Level Roles

Here are some roles that B.Com freshers often start with:

  • Accounts Assistant / Junior Accountant: Recording daily entries, maintaining ledgers, preparing invoices and helping with bank reconciliation.
  • Tally Operator / Accounts Executive: Managing a company’s books in Tally Prime — vouchers, GST entries, reports.
  • GST Executive: Preparing GST data, filing GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B, and reconciling input tax credit.
  • TDS / Tax Assistant: Calculating TDS, preparing returns and issuing Form 16/16A.
  • Article or Assistant at a CA Firm: Working on audits, return filing and compliance for many clients, which gives wide exposure quickly.
  • ERP / SAP End User: In larger companies, accounting is done in ERP software like SAP. Freshers with SAP FICO knowledge can apply for these roles.

With experience, these roles grow into senior accountant, accounts manager, tax consultant, finance executive or SAP FICO consultant.

The Gap Between a Degree and a Job

Here is the honest truth many students discover in interviews: a B.Com degree shows that you understand accounting concepts, but employers want to know if you can do the work from day one. Interviewers often ask questions like:

  • Can you pass a purchase entry with GST in Tally?
  • What is the difference between GSTR-2A and GSTR-2B?
  • How do you deduct TDS on a contractor payment?
  • Can you make a pivot table in Excel?

College syllabuses focus on theory and exams, so many graduates have never actually used Tally on real data or filed a return on the GST portal. This gap is the main reason freshers struggle to get their first accounts job, even with good marks.

Skills That Make You Employable

If you want to get hired faster, focus on these practical skills:

1. Strong Basic Accounting

Journal entries, ledgers, trial balance, trading and profit & loss account, and balance sheet. Everything else depends on this.

2. Tally Prime

Tally is widely used by small and medium businesses in India. You should be comfortable with creating a company, ledgers and groups, sales and purchase vouchers with GST, payment and receipt entries, bank reconciliation, debit and credit notes, and reports.

3. GST

Understand registration, tax invoice rules, input tax credit, reverse charge, e-way bills and return filing. Practical knowledge of the GST portal is a big plus.

4. TDS and Income Tax

Know the commonly used TDS sections, due dates, return filing and the basics of income tax returns such as ITR-1 and ITR-4.

5. MS Excel

VLOOKUP, pivot tables, IF formulas and clean formatting are used daily in accounts departments.

6. Communication and Confidence

Being able to explain what you did and why matters in interviews and on the job. Mock interviews help a lot here.

How to Become Job-Ready: A Step-by-Step Plan

  1. Revise your basics. Spend time on core accounting concepts before moving to software.
  2. Learn Tally and GST practically. Practise on realistic data, not only textbook examples.
  3. Add TDS, income tax and Excel. These make you useful for a wider range of roles.
  4. Work on real or realistic projects. A project with real client data gives you real answers in interviews.
  5. Prepare your CV. Highlight software skills and practical projects, not only marks.
  6. Practise interviews. Mock interviews remove fear and show your weak spots.
  7. Consider SAP FICO later. Once you have the basics, SAP FICO can open doors to larger companies.

Should You Join a Course?

You can learn some of this on your own, but a structured, practical course saves time and gives you guidance, practice and placement support. When choosing an institute, check:

  • Who teaches — are the faculty qualified and experienced?
  • Is the training practical, using real data?
  • Are recorded classes available if you miss a lecture?
  • What placement support is offered?
  • Can you attend a free demo class first?
